Being a new home owner, I'm too indebted to start up
a business, but it would be nice to get my hands on
more real estate. I thought of vacation rentals
or lot rentals. Headaches - yes, flexible hours -
yes.
I guess I just haven't found my *passion* yet. If
I could dream big, I'd own a large bookstore with a
coffee shop. There are bookstores in town but
none to the degree in my imagination. Hmm.... a
branch of Powells comes to mind (silly grin).
This actually brings to mind something that a member
of my congregation did: she bought a house, rents
the
upstairs out, and runs a used bookstore in the
basement. The rent pays the mortgage so the space
for the bookstore is essentially free. She also has
an
online presence, so when walk-in business is slow she
takes care of the online part. It seems to be working
well for her...maybe there's a combination plan that
would work for you? In Chicago a lot of the cool
coffee shops are in old brownstone-type buildings. I
wonder if you could get a side-by-side style building
and do coffee on the main floor, books upstairs, and
rent the other half...

And several people I know have started with online
businesses on the side and moved to bricks-and-mortar
fulltime when the business got bigger.

*grin* _I'd_ come to your coffee shop and read your
books. When do you open? :-)

In a few more years perhaps? <smile> ....unless, of course, I win the big
lottery. <hopeful grin>

Ooooo, ooooh,oooooh!!!!
[Jumping up and down and waving her arms]
Omigosh!! A bookstore...with a coffeeshop (I am sure this is not going
to resemble those big chains, right?)...with a familiar face running
the place...this sounds very, very familiar...
Would there by any chance be an upstairs window? Any authors upstairs
working?
Hmm, I don't think I can squeeze into my old jeans that got torn from
never remembering my keys to the old bookstore but maybe the owner
would hire me if I looked a bit less disreputable anyway. Now, if I
can just get some references from any shoes that remember me? <hopeful
look>
