[Sarah Cardin]

My cat Maddy has a growth on her neck and the vet says it's a tumor. The
good news is that it doesn't seem to involve any lymph nodes and it doesn't
appear to be connected to anything. And the vet thinks it might be related
to a feeding tube that was stuck into Maddy's neck when she was at the
humane society.

We won't know what sort of tumor it is for sure until the report from the
pathologist comes back tomorrow or Monday. If it's malignant, it will be my
third cat with bad cancer in the last two years.

Keep your fingers crossed for Maddy, will you?

Crossing my fingers and toes for your Maddy. Repo had one removed from
the top of his head about a year ago, I think it was, and I didn't
want to know if it was malignant, because there was no way I'd be
putting him through chemo or radiation even if it was. The vet said
that she got it all, and that was good enough for me.

Same here. I'm dry as a bone. I spend way too much time in a profession
now that doesn't allow alcohol consumption. Frankly, I get woozy just thinking
about booze!

Hmm...lessee...I retired from soldiering in Jan. 2004. I met my partner in
Dec. 2005, then my daughter graduated high school in 2006. My partner and
I immediately went off to school to get a commercial drivers license. Once we
finished, we started with an auto carrier company (thanks to the husband of my
partners former client...she was a photographer at the time). We stayed with
that company for six months then abruptly left because it was not that great.
It folded within weeks after we left!

We moved to another auto carrier company and worked for a guy driving his truck.
We discovered it was easier on both of us if I drove solo. Because of the way the
loads are set up, I could actually make more consistent pay for us alone than together.
So about Apr. 2007 I started going out alone.

This also allowed her time to spend with her super smart (and I mean super smart) son
and get him ready for college...(double majoring in math and physics).

After almost six months with this guy I couldn't take his crap anymore. He and
his (purely business) partner gouged our paycheck because I had to pay for vehicle
damages that I incurred while "learning" how to haul cars. He would want to settle
all of the damages at one time rather than be nice enough to take it out in payments.
Do you know how much the front bumper on a Volvo costs?!?! As I was only getting
payed percentage it was the least he could do! I left them and went to another guy
who had "many" trucks with this company..and he put me in an almost brand new
truck...hence, way less time in the shop for repairs and such. He takes out a very
small percentage of my paycheck and puts it into a damage fund. I get a statement
on the balance every payday. This has helped immensely!! This money is used to
pay for any "oppsies!" and it doesn't screw up my regular paycheck.

In just 3 years with this company I have been through about 45 states and am now
one of the top 50 drivers. I average over 1,500 cars deliveries a year with a damage
free percentage rate of over 99%. I didn't so much as scratch a car in all of 2009. :-)
On the flip side, I stayed on the road foralmost all of 2009 too. Recession recovery...sigh.

In 2008/2009 while I was keeping us with a paycheck, my partner had to deal with
toxic mold in the house we used to rent. She got sick, had to move (twice) and has
been working on a law suit against the landlord. He refused to do anything about the
mold. My partner has had to make several doctors visits (all out of pocket). We remain
strong through it all and hope to get married sometime in Dec. .....

Did I just make a wedding announcement?!

Well, I don't know about amazing but the last 5-6 years have
been a tough learning experience...and the first year in car
hauling was expensive enough for me! Training in my former
career has certainly gotten me through this one...so far.

Ouch. I'm sorry to hear that.

It makes me wonder about the American health care system, and how it
affects you folks down south. I've only followed the Obama health
care reforms casually, but am surprised at the divisions its caused.

I don't have a doctor myself, but there's tons of walk-in clinics
around here, and all I need is a health card. Sure, some things
require payment, but most of the basics are covered and I take it for
granted that medical help is available if something more serious is
required. (Not to say medical care in Canada is a utopia -- there are
many short-comings, and more to come as we deal with our own
national/provincial debt matters).

It's hard for me to comprehend why there's been so much
resistance...though I suppose it's in the application of the reforms,
and _who_ pays for them. <sigh>

[lastoutlaw has just been unceremoniously tackled to the floor by a
mini-army of CK(tm)s, with many more streaming through the doors of
the VB. Not unlike a heap of gold medal winning hockey players,
lastoutlaw is sprawled helplessly under a mass of limbs, (albeit,
short ones). Her shoes can barely be seen, and the rest of her is
buried under a pile of furballs, whom are excitedly proclaiming their
congratulations.

After a few minutes of general mayhem, the CK(tm)s allow lastoutlaw
back upon her feet, where she can now see that the VB has been
transformed into a party room. Multi-coloured ballons float about,
and a giant banner reads, "Congratulations, lastoutlaw!", behind the
bar.

To one side, various CK(tm)s are proudly showing off new hand-to-hand
combat techniques they have learned since seeing their one-time
instructor. On another, a long line has quickly formed of CK(tm)s
hoping for a celebratory dance with lastoutlaw, the centre of
attention in a happy, koala-filled VB.

All in all, the mood is suddenly quite festive!]

Not to mention now that she is very sensitive to mold and we've had to
replace almost every piece of furniture, clothing, etc. Things like nice
coats and the like had to go through a "special" dry cleaning process.
NOT cheap! Books can also be detoxed but it's even more expensive.
I told my partner to just write down all the titles/authors and I'd try to
just buy her new ones as we go along.

I think it will be great for my partner and me. She and her son have preexisting
conditions to which they take meds. He is 22 and still in college. This will help
greatly because the current coverage he is under will cease when he turns 23.
If we understand it correctly she will be able to cover him until he's 26. I use my
military retired benefits but I still have to pay out some costs.

As far as these right-wing, tea-baggin', whiners...pfft! I only wish for some of them
to lose their jobs/benefits and find out what it's like. They think they will be footing
the bill for "lazy" people. The real problem is that people want to work but unless
they can get "group" benefits through their work, they have to buy it privately. If
one goes privately, they can't afford it because the premiums are ridiculously high,
and even if they could afford the premium, the policy won't cover any preexisting condition
or the meds that ones needs for those conditions. A "group" policy will cover these
things. I find that all a bit unfair but that's the way our health insurance industry has
taken us...crooks!!

If we could have something similar it would probably cut half the hypertension

Truthfully, I really agree that folks cannot understand
the insurance nightmare until they have experienced it themselves or
through someone close to them. When you have group coverage, you worry
a little but you really take it for granted. Then, you buy what you
think is a solid policy with a major company
(BCBS has a stranglehold in this area), pay a fortune each month to
cover said preexisting conditions, only to find that you have a cap on
your prescription coverage that doesn't cover the medication you need
for the condition they are supposedly covering. If there is a way for
them to get out of paying, they will! They play up the <literally>
less than 5% they are paying to say, "See, we ARE paying something."

I certainly appreciate the offer. I do a lot of "swinging" through but never
really long enough to visit. I will keep it in mind when ever I can get the

...only to find that you have a cap on your prescription coverage that doesn't
cover the medication you need for the condition they are supposedly covering.
If there is a way for them to get out of paying, they will! They play up the <literally>
less than 5% they are paying to say, "See, we ARE paying something."

I think they pay people just to "watch" policy holders to find the slightest thing
to find reason to cancel on you as well. Just a few years ago, a woman was covered
under her husbands insurance and after filling out the application stuff she'd forgotten
to list one ER visit due to a stomach virus. Later she had some "female" issue and
they would not cover her expenses because she failed to list the ER visit on her
application. One medical issue had nothing to do with the other...and they got stuck
with the bill!

In my state there is this little addition to my car insurance called "uninsured motorist".
It's used to cover cost when you are in an accident with someone who doesn't have
car insurance.

Hey...is it actually _legal_ in the US to drive without car
insurance??? Or, does it vary state by state?

I'm researching insurance premiums for my 11 year old mini-van, and
living in the city means my insurance is going to be around $2000+.
Eeek! (Used to be around $1000). Insurance premiums in Ontario are
waaaaaay up, this year. Feh.

Did I mention traffic is horrible, elsewhere? It is! I can't believe
how long it takes to cross the city if you get caught in rush hour.
Ugh. I heard, (rightly?), a report that Toronto is the worst city for
commuting times in N.A., beating out L.A., even -- now, that is hard
to believe.

And transit is.....UGH! Apparently. Haven't tried it, yet. I don't
think it's that cost-effective, unless you own a monthly pass, which I
don't need...yet.

I've only followed the Obama health
care reforms casually, but am surprised at the divisions its caused.
It's hard for me to comprehend why there's been so much
resistance...though I suppose it's in the application of the reforms,
and _who_ pays for them. <sigh>

And how much the "health" industry spends on manipulating people and
buying politicians to protect its profit margin. Having an
insurance-based system at all is crazy; it's far cheaper and easier to
just fund doctors and hospitals from taxes and give people whatever
medical care they need. I mean, is there really a big problem with
people demanding unnecessary medical treatment, compared to the total
cost of healthcare? Not counting people demanding unnecessary medical
treatment because of drug company advertising telling them they need it,
of course. A healthy population is a public good, and people don't
generally choose to be sick or injured - there's no need to make it
user-pays.

can say with a certainty that public healthcare, while not perfect, is an
order of magnitude or two closer to perfect than what we have down here.

Meanwhile, at least reform is a step in the right direction. I don't
understand the Teabaggers and am very glad that there is enough publicity to
make it clear that not all of us are of that persuasion. My girlfriend is
self-employed and is planning to continue to be; she needs health insurance

stand now. Maybe people will start to see what a fantastic
economic/bootstrap/self-employment opportunity is created by un-linking

Well, no big details yet but one thing is for certain.
We're *not* getting married in our home state!
Somewhere in DC is the idea. It will likely be short
sweet and swift as we would have to travel a day to
get there...not to mention getting the papers in order
a few days before we can make it official. From what
I can tell so far, there is a 3 day waiting period once
an application is filed.

My girlfriend isself-employed and is planning
to continue to be; she needs health insurance

If I could afford a commercial GPS it would certainly save me tons of cell minutes!
I called one dealer and he had the nerve to say, "well, doesn't the driver have GPS?"
I said, "No, *I* don't, or I would be calling you!" A real genius, that one! They seem
to think we can just pop in a $60 GPS and we're good. Well, some drivers do but
those "cheaper" ones don't give "truck routes". Not all bridges in the east are 13' 6"
or higher. A commercial GPS will set you back around $400. It routes you according
to weight and height *and* in some cases will route you around traffic jams.

I have in the past, especially when the Chrysler plant was open over in
Newark. It was an overflow yard then. ...sigh...but not anymore. The last
time I was there had to have been at least two years ago when I dropped
off some old cars that I brought over from Detroit that were being shipped
overseas.
I did passby there last Friday to deliver Enterprise over on Essington, across from
Philly Airport. They just got a ton of new rentals.

I am from SC but spend most of my time in and out of Baltimore and the
northeast. We don't get much work that takes me south.

Pluff mud! It's the kind of smell that tells you, "your home".
Unless one grew up there, they wouldn't necessarily find
it appealing. I "love" the salt marshes and miss the salty
rivers. I can destroy a bushel of blue crabs...sigh...
