Why, they've been at a hockey tournament.
The 6th annual Maine Mosquitoes tournament was just this past weekend. My
sixth appearance as well, though I'm no longer a Mosquito. This was my
third tournament as a Breakaway. Number 14.
A brief summation, as I need to get to bed so I can get up to snowblow
before work tomorrow:
Friday night, Breakaways take on the NEWTs, an old rival and drinking
partner. We see them once a year and always enjoy the visit. A competitive
game put us up two goals at the end. I had a fabulous game and was told it
was my best ever in a Breakaways jersey. The game was high tempo and
physical and the refs stopped us in the second with a warning that they did
not want to be making _any_ more checking calls.
Sore, we returned to the rink for a 1 pm game Saturday against Queenstown
from NJ. Lots of pressure from them made us work our tired, sore bodies
hard. We saw an open ice check that sent one of our forwards sailing, in a
full feet over head flip. Very impressive looking. This game we had to
bust our asses and dig deep and pulled off a 3-2 win.
At six the same day, we played again... dog tired by now against the UNB
Saint John Seawolves. I got my only penalty of the tournament for hooking
the living shit out of a speedy little girl who had me beaton the inside for
what would otherwise have been a free shot. That penalty killed, we went on
and fought hard and pulled off a 2-2 tie.
This put us at the same points placement as the Seawolves and placed us
first on +/- We met the Seawolves again Sunday for the two pm match. Note:
people on our team were seen doing naked snow angels at the goaltenders
house (on the cover of her pool) at midnight. Our college age opponents,
who's parents had come to watch them play, no doubt went home to bed. Our
average team age was 38, theirs 19. They had 3 coaches. We probably had
more coaches, but we were all players as well.
This match ended 2 1/2 minutes into sudden death OT when the Seawolves
scored. We gave them a great game. I thought my moment of glory had
arrived when I put up a shot from the right point and the players, like the
Red Sea, parted, clearing the way to the goal. Unfortunately, the goalie
got a moment to see it and made the save. A nice, juicy rebound out front
was quickly covered.
It was good fun. And, after the application of a great amount of peer
pressure, we will be heading to Montreal with the team come April for the
CHE women's tournament. Will also be fabulous fun.
My "moment" of the weekend when my right thigh cramped something awful
during the game. Massaging it after the game, I realized the source of the
cramp was the site of a rafting injury from two years ago. Holy cow, I knew
I'd done some damage, but I wasn't expecting to still have repercussions.
I'd never noticed before the palpable dent in the muscle where the hematoma
was. I got the feeling in the area back well in the past year, so I thought
it was all better. Live and learn.
Now, it's off to bed. Snowblowing awaits with the dawn.
