We had the cable shut off a few weeks back. Without tv, we're spending much
more time tuned to NPR. This week, broadcast of the RNCs convention in New
York. So I've listened some. I can't even believe they have the gall to
bring back "compassionate conservativism."
I wanted Elizabeth Dole last night to finish every sentance about
inclusivity with ", excepting homosexuals." She let me down. Such a
flaming heap of horseshit. Now, being from Massachusetts, I don't like
Kerry. We've hated him forever, so long in fact, I don't even remember why.
Still... like him or leave him, Kerry is a much better choice. It's crazy
to think he'll achieve any of his platform goals if he's up against
Republican control in both the house and senate, but he still won't be
starting wars, embarassing us around the world, and selling our labor to the
corporate interests.
Regarding the recent federal change in OT regulations... Our Democratic
governor here in Maine just signed a quickie bill to replace all the lingo
the feds dropped. My nurse/ girlfriend will still get paid OT when she
works OT. Apparently, Maine could do this because there were already some
OT rules on the books here. I heard it explained that if a state has no
rules yet, they can't start now.
Perhaps we'll try a "no media household" for hte next two days.

Hmm. No public television? Total of seven broadcast channels here.
I love broadcast televion.

They'll probably cover it on MAD-TV. =20

Kerry. We've hated him forever, so long in fact, I don't even remember =
why.

He came back from Nam, quite the war hero, lobbed his medels into
Arlington Cemetary, and testified against the war to a Congressional
committee: all on television. At that time, slots in the "reserve"
were passed out according to patronage at the state level. The
alternative was getting shot at; strings were pulled pretty openly,
and it was so common that everyone had to accept it. Far from the
case these days, I do believe. But, still, you had to be there at the
time to really appreciate the nuances, because nobody's still
referring to it directly today. =20

Kerry was a senator and something of a deal-broker, though not big
time. He'll get foreign policy right; congresspeeps being sensitive
to their constituencies will do the rest. (That's the story. The
plot-line gets messy, but the system does tend to work, averaged over
a long enough time period.)

A state legislature can do anything it likes. Then somebody can sue
for relief under federal law. Like to see that litigated. (As I
never tire of saying, I'm not a lawyer.)

Step *away* from the tuner. Just don't *listen* to it, my dear!
=46eminism is in remission. A generation of women largely don't realize
how economically priviliged they are. It's a cyclic deal. Twenty
something females *and* males (astoundingly) are taking gender and
racial equality kinda sorta as a given. Don't realize they're doing
it, thus the effects of bias creep back in. It seems very educable,
though. =20
